Dermal fillers are injectable anti-ageing agents, which are used to diminish and fill facial lines and wrinkles, as well as restore volume and fullness to the face. Dermal fillers can be used to:
- Plump thin lips
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
What causes facial lines to appear, as well as volume loss in the face?
As we age, the skin on our faces begins to sag and develop wrinkles. This is because the skin loses elastin, collagen, fat and most importantly hyaluronic acid. How quickly your wrinkles develop, and how pronounced they become, is partly due to genetics and partly due to environmental factors, e.g. sun exposure and lifestyle. For centuries women have sought methods of combatting the ageing process and reducing facial lines to keep the skin as smooth as possible, and now the treatments available are some of the most effective ever.
Dermal fillers can be very helpful in those with early signs of ageing, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation treatments in conjunction with botulinum, PRP, and thread lifting.
What am I to expect from Remedies Clinic, Malta for dermal fillers?
At Remedies Clinic, we use state of the art Juvederm fillers. Juvederm fillers are a particularly effective treatment because it acts directly as a substitute for the body’s own hyaluronic acid. It is designed to work with the layers of skin, rather than on them, and as such it produces dramatically improved results in the skin quality. This treatment adds volume specifically wherever it is needed, and it is also one of the most effective non-surgical cosmetic enhancements available on the market.
The hyaluronic acid works by smoothing away folds and wrinkles most effectively around the nose and mouth area, which is where most of these signs of ageing are more prominent. It also reduces and softens facial lines across the forehead and around the eye, leading to a rejuvenated look.
The process itself is a simple one. Treatment areas are identified and then fine needles are used to administer small quantities of hyaluronic acid under the skin. It acts virtually immediately to create a lift in that area, which reduces or eliminates any lines or folds, depending on the severity of them and the results last for up to 18-24 months.

Botulinum toxin (BOTOX)
At Remedies Med-Aesthetic Clinics we will improve your wrinkles in a natural and graceful way. Our doctors are specialised in non-surgical rejuvenation of the skin. We will listen to your concerns and help you decide what treatments best suit you by considering your goals and expectations. We will discuss with you what is a realistic and achievable outcome, and what to expect from your treatment. Botulinum toxin treatment is very easy to overdo, especially in the hands of poorly trained medical teams or unzealous practitioners.
- What causes unsightly facial wrinkles?
Wrinkles are creases or fold in the skin; usually wrinkles appear as we age. The first wrinkles to appear on our face tend to occur as a result of facial expressions. Sun damage, smoking, dehydration may also cause wrinkles to develop. Wrinkles are an inevitable part of the natural ageing process. As we become older our skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic. Eventually, wrinkles, creases and lines form on our skin.
- How can these wrinkles be treated successfully?
By protecting against UV radiation by regular use of sun screen, it is possible to reduce premature damage to the skin. Expression lines are generally treated with Botulinum Toxin Type A injections that relax the muscles causing the compression of the skin. Botulinum Toxin Type A is composed of a natural, purified protein, and it is most commonly injected in the muscles between the eyebrows, the forehead and around the eyes. Botulinum Toxin Type A generally lasts for about 4 to 6 months, sometimes longer. By stopping the muscle movement that cause wrinkles, Botulinum Toxin Type A injections can also prevent static lines from becoming deeper by stopping the compression of skin. If static lines or lines at rest are already present, then Botulinum Toxin Type A injections generally do not reverse these and platelet rich plasma (PRP) will be needed. However, the application of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections at regular intervals gives the skin a rest from compression, and often static wrinkles may improve slightly over time. Botulinum Toxin Type A can be used in conjunction with platelet rich plasma (PRP) to help treat both static and dynamic wrinkles taking a holistic approach to facial rejuvenation.
- What does treatment with botulinum toxin involve?
Treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type a injections involves having a number of small injections in the targeted areas. The aesthetic physician will decide how to precisely inject for best results. The process takes only a short time to perform. The needles used are extremely fine, and only a small volume is injected. The discomfort experienced is minimal and very well tolerated. After the injections, you will gradually notice relaxation of the muscles treated. This can start at 2-3 days, but may take up to two weeks to be very noticeable. Normal activities may be resumed after treatment. However, you will be instructed not to exercise or touch the treated areas for 4 hours so as not to spread the injected Botulinum Toxin Type A further than intended.
- How can one tackle excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis, excessive perspiration)?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition that is characterised by sweating or perspiration in excess of the normal needs of the body. It is classified as either primary or secondary hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is not due to any particular underlying reason, and can result in excessive sweating in the underarms (axilla), palms and feet. There is usually an associated family history. Sweating usually affects both sides, and is less at night than during the day.
Botulinum Toxin Type A injection is the most effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. This treatment is particularly done on the armpits (axillae) and on the palms of hands and soles of feet. At Remedies Med-Aesthetic Clinics injectable treatments are carried out by an experienced aesthetic doctor specially trained in the United Kingdom to give you the best possible results.
Botulinum Toxin Type A works by preventing the release of a chemical that signals the sweat glands to activate.
- What is involved when using Botox for excessive sweating?
The area to be treated is identified. Even though the procedure is not considered to be painful, a local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to make the treatment even more comfortable. The underarms (axillae) are the most common areas treated by Botulinum Toxin Type A injections and 50 units of the product on each side are usually administered.
- What results can I expect and how long do they last?
After treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A you will experience around 80% reduction in sweating and the effect will last for around 6 to 7 months.

Laser Vein Removal
At Remedies Med-Aesthetic Clinics we can take care of your unsightly veins, whether on the face or legs, by using our state-of-the-art Candela Nd:Yag laser. Our latest technology laser equipment, along with our highly experienced and internationally qualified doctor, will certainly give you the best results.
- What are unsightly veins?
Unsightly veins (telangiectasias, also known as spider or thread veins) are small purple to red blood vessels that can develop anywhere in the body, but most commonly seen on the face around the nose, cheeks and chin. They are also often visible on the leg, mainly on the upper thigh, ankle or feet, as well as on the back & neck. The cause is unknown, but heredity plays a strong role in the development of this condition. Spider veins are progressive, and usually increase in number and visibility with age.
- How does laser tackle these veins?
The 1064nm Nd:YAG Candela laser is used in this circumstance to reduce the presence of small spider leg and deeper facial veins. The 1064nm wavelength penetrates through the skin and the energy from this laser is absorbed by the pigment of the blood in the leg/facial veins and closes it down. Kindly note that only spider leg veins and not varicose veins are treatable with laser. It generally takes 1 to 3 treatments spaced at two monthly intervals to improve the appearance of leg/facial veins. Some of these veins disappear immediately during treatment, while some will be partially disrupted and take a few weeks to reduce.
Legs/body: 140 euro per one 10 x 10 cm area, 250 euro for both legs
Face: 85 euro per session
Pigmented lesions treatment
At Remedies Med-Aesthetic Clinics, our internationally trained Medical Doctors will carefully assess your increased pigmentation concerns and formulate a treatment plan specific for your needs. We have a wide range of treatment options, including laser, chemical peels and platelet rich plasma. This will ensure that you will get the treatment most suited for your type of pigmentation problem. Remedies’ laser can effectively treat most sun spots, age spots and freckles, usually in 1-2 treatments.
- What is skin pigmentation?
Melanin, which is the pigment which gives skin its colour, is produced by cells in the skin called melanocytes. There are typically between 1000 and 2000 melanocytes per square millimetre of skin. Skin colour difference between fair and dark people is not due to the number of melanocytes in their skin, but due to the melanocytes’ activity. Excessive skin pigmentation is a result of abnormal production and deposition of melanin by the melanocytes. This leads to the appearance of brown or darker spots of pigmentation in the skin.
Causes for pigmentation issues include:
– UV radiation – in most cases, especially in areas of high UV radiation levels like Malta, skin pigmentation problems can be caused by excessive UV or sun exposure (most common).
– Hormonal – as seen in melasma or chloasma that is a type of pigmentation usually caused by pregnancy or the contraceptive pill (common).
– Trauma to the skin – this can be a result of physical trauma to the skin, or acne. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (common).
- What is the use of lasers in cases of abnormal pigmentation?
Our state of the art Alexandrite lasers can be used for the treatment of skin pigmentation and have minimal or no impact on normal skin. This is possible due to the process of selective photothermolysis. This is a term that describes how a particular laser wavelength is attracted to pigmented lesions, and only minimally to the normal skin to allow selective removal of a lesion. This allows the laser to selectively disrupt the pigment with minimal or no damage to surrounding skin.
- Can excessive pigmentation be tackled using other treatments beyond laser?
The first method of treating skin pigmentation is to prevent its appearance or worsening by daily application of sunscreen. At Remedies we also offer a range of chemical peels as well as platelet rich plasma (PRP) to tackle pigmentation issues.
Small 3 x 3 cm area: 60 euro per one area, 110 euro multiple areas
Large 10 x 10 cm area: 140 euro per one area, 250 euro multiple areas
Skin Rejuvenation – PRP
Remedies Med-Aesthetic Clinic in Birkirkara has pioneered the introduction on the market the natural remedy to achieve a younger and fresher look for your skin. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP as it is known, is a procedure that involves the use of your own blood cells and growth factor to heal and stop the ageing of your skin. This procedure is relatively painless and results are evident as early as three days after treatment. The treatment is carried out by an internationally trained medical team within our high-end aesthetics facility.
- What is PRP (platelet rich plasma)?
PRP (or platelet rich plasma) is a medical procedure that involves withdrawal of a small blood sample. The small blood sample taken from the client is then subsequently separated by means of a centrifuge, achieving a golden yellow liquid that is full of platelets, plasma and growth factors which are involved in tissue regeneration, as well as vitamins and minerals. When PRP is injected into your skin, the injected growth factors and platelets will ignite the process of regeneration within the deep facial lines, wrinkles and improve the texture of your skin.
Since the aim of PRP is to fix any skin issues, when injected in areas with hyper-pigmentation it will help to reduce the problem, as well as being useful for removal of stretch marks and cellulite.
It is the treatment of choice for bags of sagging skin and discolouration under the eyes, as well as the neck, the breast area and the hands, where traditional hyaluronic acid fillers are not technically feasible, with a high degree of success and client satisfaction.
PRP is a treatment that is performed up to eight consecutive sessions, with each session four weeks apart, but after these sessions you will be free to continue your normal life without any worry. There is no downtime after each procedure as there are no outward signs of any procedure having been performed, with no bruising or sutures.
- What am I to expect from Remedies Clinic, Malta for PRP Facial Rejuvenation?
At Remedies Clinic we take pride in treating our customers to a pain-free and safe journey through the whole process, where everything is discussed and tailor-made to the client’s needs. The initial consultation with our internationally trained Medical Doctor will suggest the approach of treatment ideal to suit your needs, so as to achieve your goal in the most pleasant manner.
This procedure is risk-free as it contains no substances foreign to your body, using only factors from your own filtered blood, hence no adverse reactions can occur.
- What is PRP?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (hence PRP) is a new procedure using a client’s own blood cells to drastically improve the client’s own skin in need of rejuvenation.
- What does it involve?
The client is assessed for suitability for the procedure by a trained medical doctor. A small blood sample is taken painlessly by the doctor, the blood is concentrated in a specific machine (centrifuge), and the concentrated cells and growth factors are used on the areas chosen for the treatment.
- What is it used for?
PRP is mainly used to drastically rejuvenate the skin and make it look younger, fresher, without wrinkles and to tackle hyper-pigmentation, without using substances foreign to the body. It is mainly used for the face, but can also be used on the neck and hands. It also has a role in hair regrowth, based on evidence-based medicine, as well as in the management of stretch marks and cellulite.
It is particularly useful for bags under the eyes, the neck and the hands, where traditional fillers cannot be used.
- How long does it take to perform?
It takes about 45 minutes each session to put local anaesthetic cream, take blood sample, concentrate it and re-inject it in the area targeted for treatment.
- What are the side-effects?
Minimal discomfort from the injection, warmth and redness which pass within 24 hours. No allergic reaction can happen as it uses the client’s own cells, with no risk of problems or allergies arising.
- Is it painful?
No pain is experienced except for minimal discomfort from the injection needle used. The doctor is trained to make the PRP procedure as painless as possible.
- When can I expect results?
Results occur within 4 weeks from the first procedure. The more PRP sessions are performed, the better the result, and the result keeps increasing with more PRP sessions performed (cumulative & additive effect).
- Who performs the procedure?
The procedure is strictly performed by a specialized medical doctor trained in medical aesthetics in the UK.
- How many sessions are involved?
2-4 sessions is the minimum necessary to achieve a satisfactory result. For hair regrowth and for more complex skin issues, up to 8 sessions may be performed. Sessions are 4 weeks apart. You will have a follow-up visit after each session to be reviewed by the medical team performing the procedure.
250 euro per individual session, package of 4 sessions at 800 euro

- What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal consists of a medical grade laser (red laser) being applied over the growing hair follicle. The laser beam is set to identify dark pigment, meaning the dark hair follicle, which will result in a temperature shift from approximately 36.5 degrees to over 60 degrees. This sudden change in temperature in the actively growing hair bulb will result in stopping the hair from growing back. Laser hair removal is set in intervals, meaning that several sessions, spaced from six to eight weeks apart, are needed to totally eradicate all the active hair bulbs within the area treated. The distance between one appointment and another varies according to the re-growth and settings used by your practitioner.
